Malcolm Lai

Malcom is a Managing Director at BPEA Real Estate and Head of Construction and Development. Malcolm is responsible for technical and risk management matters relating to the Firm’s real estate investments, particularly in relation to construction and development. He joined BPEA Real Estate in 2013.

From 2010 until 2013, Mr Lai worked at Invesco Real Estate where he was the Head of Development & Construction overseeing projects for the Invesco Asia Funds. Prior to AIG’s Asian real estate business unit being divested to Invesco Real Estate in 2010, Mr Lai worked at AIG Global Real Estate from 1997 where he set up the Development & Construction Department and managed a regional team which oversaw a wide range of projects owned by AIG and AIG-managed funds. While at AIG, Mr. Lai was involved in over 100 projects in 13 countries, including new construction, redevelopments and value-add refurbishments relating to both equity and debt investments made by AIG. During this period Mr Lai worked closely with Operating Partners such as City Development, CapitaLand, Grocon, LaiSun and WingTai. A key focus of Mr. Lai at AIG was to ensure that projects were executed on time, within budget and to quality specifications. From 1991 to 1996, Mr Lai worked at a number of leading architectural practices, including Sherman Kung Architects (associated with I M Pei & Partners for the Bank of China Tower), Ong & Ong Architects (office of the previous First Lady of Singapore) and Leigh & Orange Architects. Mr Lai received his Masters of Project Management from the University of South Australia and his Bachelor of Architecture and his Bachelor of Applied Science from Curtin University, Western Australia. He is a Chartered Architect and is registered with the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects). Mr Lai is a regular speaker at the Asia Greenbuild conferences and is fluent in English and Cantonese.
