Jamestown employs approximately 450 people worldwide with headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, and Cologne, Germany. The company has offices in Amsterdam, Bogotá, Boston, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco. As of 30 June 2019, the company has assets under management of $10.2bn.
Jamestown is a design-focused real estate investment and management company with a 35-plus year track record and a clear mission: to transform spaces into innovation hubs and community centres. Current and previous iconic projects include Chelsea Market in New York City, Industry City in Brooklyn, Ponce City Market in Atlanta, Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco, and the Innovation and Design Building in Boston. The company has grown its portfolio in key markets throughout the US and expanded its investment footprint to South America and Europe.
Jamestown differentiates itself through its vertically integrated platform. In addition to excelling at the traditional functions of a real estate management company, such as acquisitions, capital markets, and asset management, Jamestown possesses internal expertise to bring added value to all aspects of the real estate business. Through in-house capabilities in Development & Construction, Architecture & Design, Retail Leasing, Creative & Marketing, and Food & Beverage curation, employees maximise value throughout an asset’s ownership period.
Jamestown manages an open-end core-plus real estate investment vehicle for institutional investors, targeting US core-plus office, retail and mixed-use assets. Jamestown also manages core funds for German investors.
Since 2009, Jamestown has managed timberland in the US South through a series of closed-end funds and an institutional open-end fund.
With an office in Bogotá, Colombia, Jamestown also focuses on opportunistic real estate investments in the Andean countries of Colombia, Peru, Chile and Argentina, raising closed-end funds for institutional investors.
Investment principles & strategy
For over 35 years, Jamestown has been investing in primary markets across the United States. The firm attributes its successful track record to a two-pronged approach. First, as an operator Jamestown utilises proven value creation strategies such as cutting expenses, converting basement, second-storey and loading-dock space to retail and buying out below-market leases. Secondly, Jamestown has consistently shown discipline when buying and selling assets. For example, in an 18-month period starting in 2006, Jamestown was an aggressive seller of real estate. After performing a hold/sell analysis on each asset, Jamestown sold 73% of its core and core-plus portfolio between the second quarter of 2006 and the first quarter of 2007.
Strategic corporate development
Jamestown’s open-end core-plus fund with a focus on premier office, retail and mixed-use assets in major US metropolitan centres seeks to generate attractive risk-adjusted returns through a combination of stable cash yield and long-term capital appreciation driven by a focus on growing NOI.
Jamestown’s timber platform acquires, owns, operates, and sells core timberland properties in the US located in prime timber markets which are managed primarily for timber production.
In Latin America, Jamestown targets major metropolitan areas that exhibit sound real estate fundamentals and prospects for long-term economic growth, with a primary focus on Colombia, Peru, Chile and a secondary focus on Argentina.
