A Landslide Victory in Japan’s General Election Strengthens Abe’s Hand

Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s big electoral win represents a vote of support for Abenomics—and possibly for his goal of a stronger military.

Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s snap-election gambit seems to have paid off, with exit polls showing his Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) achieving an overwhelming victory on Sunday. Early projections show Abe’s ruling coalition securing a supermajority – more than 310 seats out of 465 in the lower house of Japan’s legislative body, the Diet. A third term would make Abe the longest-serving Prime Minister in Japanese history.
